17 February 2017
Dear West View family
January flew by without me having a chance to get a letter out to you. So here’s the first newsletter of 2017!
We welcome Matt Tayler onto the staff team as our new Worship Co-ordinator. Matt has been a committed volunteer in worship ministry at West View since his teens, and is, in his first weeks on staff, already proving a valuable member of the team.
We also welcome ‘TK’ Mokwena, who will be a Youth Intern, working under James’ supervision during 2017. TK has also been an enthusiastic volunteer in Youth and Children’s ministries. He spent last year doing the year-of-your-life programme at Hatfield Christian Church, and returns to us now as in intern whilst he furthers his studies.
JOIN OUR LENTEN CAMPAIGN 2017: RADICAL JESUS, SUBVERSIVE GRACE
We have domesticated Jesus. We have watered down the radical nature of Jesus’ teaching to such an extent that we have come to believe that being a Christian is about fitting in with the way things are, only being happier, more loving and more honest as we do so. But when we photoshop both the radical nature of Jesus’ mission and the subversive nature of God’s grace out of the picture, we end up with an insipid, weak, watered down understanding of the gospel. We find ourselves worshipping not the real Jesus, but a lifeless cardboard cut-out of Him. During Lent 2017, we’re exploring the way in which Jesus’ life and teaching offered a way of living that is radically different to the way of the world. I invite you to participate in Radical Jesus, Subversive Grace, in these ways:
1. Join a 6 week study group, and meet weekly to watch the DVD input, and reflect together on a scripture passage that links to the Sunday sermon topic. We’re aiming to have 40 groups meeting in homes throughout Centurion
2. Spend 5 minutes of each day reflecting on, and praying, the daily devotions that will be available on our Facebook page and in booklets.
3. Make sure that you are in church each Sunday as we explore themes like Dying to Live, Enemy Love, Upside Down, Less is More, (Un)Fair and Inside Out,
ELECTION OF BISHOP FOR LIMPOPO DISTRICT 2019 AND BEYOND
At our District Synod this May, we’ll be electing a new bishop to replace Bishop Themba in January 2019. The Hennops River Circuit Quarterly Meeting has nominated me as a candidate, and in obedience to the commitment I made at my ordination to go wherever I am sent, I have accepted nomination. I will be one of several people nominated, and I ask you to join me in praying that through the process that unfolds over the next 4 months, God’s will for my life, for the Limpopo District, and for West View Methodist Church is done.
Thank you for your generous, sacrificial and faithful giving during January. Your tithes and offerings totalled R505 610, just R1390 short of our budgeted income of R507 000! Let’s keep it up, and see if we can stay on budget, and so resource West View to fulfil God’s mission without hindrance during 2017.
