Dear West View family

I’m thrilled to sketch for you a picture of what’s going on at West View over the next 2 months:

SAM-TOWEEL MOORE

From the NGO “Growing Champions” will be back at this Sunday’s evening service, sharing with us practical tools for overcoming our addictions and compulsive behaviours. Sunday 14th August @ 6pm.

MEN@WORK

She will share with us the insights of her research and engage in dialogue with the men present. This event is not just for former or current members of the armed forces, but for all men at West View and beyond. Bring along your father, your sons, your friends. A light meal will be served.

COMMUNITY CAMP

There are just 5 weeks to go until our Community Camp. This weekend away together is going to be a highlight in our church year, with laughter, learning, and lots of fun for all. It will be a great opportunity to make new friendships in the congregation, and to deepen existing friendships. Click on http://www.westview.org.za/images/News_Pics/Community_camp_2016.pdf for all the details, and sign up soon.

STAFF CHANGES

This month we bid farewell to Wendy Walker, who is moving with Bruce and their boys to Yorkshire. Wendy has been a huge blessing to us in the 3 ½ years that she has been on staff at West View. We wish her and her family well in this adventure. Val Lazenby retires after 15 years on staff at West View. Val’s passion, compassion and wisdom will be missed on the staff team. We’re grateful that she’ll still be an active member of the congregation. We welcome Lael Du Toit onto staff. Lael replaces Val as Pastoral Care Co-ordinator and PA to Siphiwe and Philip. The position of Pastor for Worship, Children, Youth and Family Ministries will be filled in January 2017.

FINANCES

The year to date shortfall of R89 000, reported in my June e-letter, has crept up slightly to R82 324 as at 31st July. Thank you to all of you who continue to give regularly, sacrificially, and joyfully towards God’s work at West View. Your faith and faithfulness makes all that happens at West View possible. Let’s continue to give in faith, and see God’s work be done through us. Our goal is to eliminate the shortfall by the end of 2016.

GREATEST OF THESE

We all know that Love is the highest virtue. And yet we struggle to show that love to our families, colleagues and neighbours. How do we live a life of radical, generous, joyful love? What does that even look like? Sign up for our church wide campaign, in which we’ll study Paul’s powerful description of love in 1 Corinthians 13. I’m hoping that if you’re not in a home group, you’ll sign up to join a 6 week study group for this campaign, contact Margot at 012 660 2572 or This email address is being protected from spambots. METHODIST CONFERENCE IN THE HENNOPS RIVER CIRCUIT

Our denomination’s annual Conference is taking place in our Circuit, at the St Georges Hotel in Irene from 21st – 25th September. Please pray for our Presiding Bishop, Zipho Siwa, and the 100 or so delegates as they meet for this important time. West View is leading the worship times at Conference.

PRAY AS YOU GO

Our Duke student, Pat Hecker introduced me to a great devotional app that has brought new life to my daily devotions. Pray as you go offers a 10 – 12 minute daily devotion, which includes sacred music, scripture reading, plus a few thoughts and questions for reflection. I’ve taken to listening to it, reflecting and praying, whist I sit in bed drinking that first cup of coffee of the day. If your daily devotions have become stale or non-existent, why not give it a try?

With warm Christian love

 Ian
